Discover the Benefits of a Sabbatical Abroad
Ever dreamed of taking a sabbatical, but not quite sure how to make it happen or where to go? You might be mid-career. You could be fresh into the workforce. Alternatively, you might be exploring what’s next. A sabbatical in Australia or New Zealand could be exactly the shift you need.
Why Take a Sabbatical?
A sabbatical isn’t just a break, it’s a deeply transformational experience. But here’s the thing: it rarely feels like a lightning-bolt moment. It’s more like a slow seep. One day, something happens and you catch yourself thinking, “Huh, that didn’t shake me like it used to.” Or “Wait, I actually handled that like a boss.”
That’s because you’ve done something huge. You’ve stepped outside your comfort zone into the unknown. You’ve had to listen, adapt, unlearn, relearn. You’ve figured out how to navigate in a culture that wasn’t your own. Somehow you didn’t just survive. You grew.
It sneaks up on you, but when it hits, you realise: this version of me is stronger, calmer, more grounded. And that shift? It stays with you long after the plane ride home.

Sometimes you need
distance to reconnect.
Who Is a Sabbatical For?
Honestly? It’s for anyone.
- In your 20s? Add purpose to your gap year or early career.
- In your 40s? Recover from burnout or explore a new direction.
- In your 60s+? Reconnect with yourself or tick off a lifelong dream.
A sabbatical can mean different things:
- A purpose-filled break, not just a passport full of stamps
- A professional pause to upskill or test a new path
- A chance to live abroad, learn a language or just breathe
After attending the ICEF ANZA Conference, I remembered the numerous untapped sabbatical options available. These options exist for all life stages.
Because it’s never too early – or too late – to reset.
My own story
After more than a decade in corporate roles, I made a conscious choice to pause and reset. And to be honest? I was absolutely running. Running from work, from the constant pressure, feeling squeezed like a lemon, being told not to be good enough, but to just have saved the project (huh???) and from all the exhausting b*** that came with surviving in male-dominated environments. I’d had enough.
So I packed up and took off. I started with 10 months across Western Europe. I then spent seven more months roaming through the USA, New Zealand, Thailand, and Mauritius. I volunteered with community projects that actually mattered, immersed myself in new cultures, and slowly began to reconnect with myself.
That time didn’t just recharge me, it changed me. It planted the seed for what’s now, in 2025, my own business. I help others navigate transitions, burnout, or simply the urge to rediscover who they are outside the daily grind. I came back with fresh perspective, new energy, and a global network I still lean on today.

FAQs – What People Usually Ask
Q: Do I have to quit my job to take a sabbatical?
A: Not always. Many employers support unpaid leave for professional development or travel, especially if you return with new skills.
Q: How long should my sabbatical be?
A: Most of our clients take 3 to 12 months. This period is long enough to unplug and transform. It is also short enough to reintegrate smoothly.
Q: What if I’m over 35?
A: We work with programs that accept mature learners. We also help explore tourist or student visa options for older adults.
Q: Can I work during my sabbatical?
A: Yes, depending on your visa. In Australia and NZ, student and Working Holiday Visas usually allow part-time work.
