A day in Australia
A working holiday isn’t just about ticking landmarks off a list. It’s about everyday experiences that turn into lasting memories:
- Starting the morning with a flat white after an early gym shift or café job
- Finishing work and heading straight to the beach, hiking trail, or surf lesson
- Road-tripping between jobs, discovering small towns, waterfalls and hidden campsites
- Working a ski season in Thredbo or a summer job on the Gold Coast
- Trying Aussie classics like smashed avo, meat pies, and Tim Tams — paid for by your own wages
Whether you’re coming from Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Italy) or Latin America (Argentina, Chile, Brazil), the WHV lets you support your travels with flexible work while truly living in the country.
Application Criteria
The Australian WHV comes in two streams:
- Subclass 417 (Working Holiday visa) only for eligible countries
- Subclass 462 (Work and Holiday visa) only for other eligible countries with ballots/pre-applications
To be eligible, you must:
- Hold a passport from an eligible country
- Be aged 18–30 at application (or 18–35 for Canada, Ireland, UK)
- Travel without dependents
- Meet health and character requirements
Bonus Tips from Me – Age Rule Breakdown
The key is your age at application time, not entry. Both streams give 12 months from grant to enter Australia.
Age 30 Example (Most Countries)
You’ve got 12 months from the day your visa is granted to enter Australia. So if you apply before your 31st birthday, you can enter before you turn 32. I’ve done it exactly like that — applied 10 days before my 31st birthday and entered 11.5 months after grant.
Age 35 Example (Canada, Ireland, UK)
Apply before your 36th birthday, travel anytime within 12 months after grant — even after turning 37. Maximum flexibility!

How long does it take to get a Working Holiday Visa for Australia?
Processing times vary, but most applications are processed within 1–3 weeks. It’s best to apply early, especially before peak travel seasons.
Can I apply for a second or third Working Holiday Visa?
If you’ve completed 3 months of specified regional work, you may qualify for a second visa. Completing 6 months of work qualifies you for a third visa. The work must be in eligible industries like farming, construction, or tourism. You’ll need payslips and proof of location.
What jobs can I do on a Working Holiday Visa?
You can work in hospitality, construction, agriculture, retail, tourism, and more. Some employers even offer sponsorship options after your WHV ends.
Can I study while on a WHV?
Yes, you can study for up to 4 months (17 weeks). This is great if you want to improve your English or do a short course.
Can I work for the same employer for the full year?
You can work up to 6 months for one employer. In some cases, you can apply for an exemption to stay longer (like working in aged care, construction, or flood recovery).
Do I need a return flight to apply?
No, a return flight is not required, but you must show proof of funds — usually AUD 5,000 plus enough for a return ticket or onward travel.
Can I apply if I’m already in Australia?
No, for your first WHV (Subclass 417 or 462), you must apply from outside Australia. Second and third WHVs can be applied for while you’re in the country.
